Kabhi Khud Pe...

Today is the birthday of the legendary singer Md. Rafi. So, here is a song that I would like to dedicate to him. The song is Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Halat Pe Rona Aaya from the movie Hum Dono. The song was written Sahir Ludhianvi and composed by Jaidev. I absolutely love this song. In fact, I love it so much, I hate it. The pathos that Rafi brings out in this song is just heart wrenching. My version here is, of course, a very crude attempt. I know there are several places where the intricacies of the song didn't come out well, but it's my first attempt. I will post a revised version of this song later.

Translation of the Lyrics:

Sometimes at myself...

Sometimes at myself,
And sometimes at the circumstances, I cry.
Once the topic comes up, at every topic I cry.

I thought I had forgotten her.
But what happened today, that I started crying?

Why do I live? For whom do I live?
Asking these questions, I cried.

Who cries for another in this world, O' friend?
Everyone is so busy crying about their own problems.

After translating the lyrics of this song, I wonder if should translate songs at all, because I am coming to realize that my translations do not do justice to the beauty of the original poetry.
