Making friendship with life

Learnt this morning that Dev Anand, the debonair film star of the 50s and 60s, died yesterday. Dev Anand's movies always had the best music. There are hundreds of songs that I love from Dev Anand's movies, but the one that I perhaps relate to most at a personal level is Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya. Sahir's lyrics, which is concurrently philosophical and lighthearted, unfailingly touches your heart. Here's the song in tribute to the indefatigable star:

Title: Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya
Movie: Hum Dono (1961)
Music: Jaidev
Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi
Original Singer: Md. Rafi

English Translation of Lyrics

I lived making friendship with life
I blew away my worries and tensions into the air

Grieving over tragedies was useless
so, I moved on celebrating those tragedies

Whatever I received, I took it as my destiny
Whatever I lost, I went on forgetting it

Where there is no difference between happiness and sadness
I moved on, bringing my heart to that state (of equanimity)
